If you come across these masses on weeds, siding, fence posts you can squish them or scrape into the garbage. Once the moths emerge they will be mating and laying eggs. And remember that diatomaceous earth needs to be right at the base of the plants and to stay dry to be effective. Smaller caterpillars are most susceptible to the pesticides that you tried. Start looking for them toward the edge of the patch of affected plants. Or during the day try digging down about 2 inches into the soil and sifting them out. You may need to go out at night when they are active. Pluck them off and then dunk into soapy water to kill them (or feed them to chickens or cut in half). Hand removing the cutworms may be your best bet to reduce the damage. You can also try this barrier method to block mass plantings. This won't work if the cutworms are already on the plants. The cutworm won't be able to come into contact those plants. It can be made out of cardboard (cut paper towel tube is an example) or even folded foil. This should be 2-3" above the soil and also buried a few inches. A barrier placed around the base of plants to physically keep the cutworm from causing damage. Things you can do right now to protect your veggies: It is very difficult to manage these larger caterpillars with pesticides. ![]() This is the stage before they become a moth.
